An EMG test is designed and used to record and analyze the electrical activity of your muscles without stimulating them. During the test, our electrodiagnostic medical experts determine how well your nerves running from your muscles to your spinal cord work.<\/p>\n
Small pins\/needles are placed in specific muscles to perform the test. As the pins are inserted, you can expect to experience some slight pain or discomfort. However, we use a cold spray to make inserting and removing pins much more comfortable.<\/p>\n
You’ll be asked to relax and contact the muscles during the test. The doctor will monitor the electrical signals emitted by your muscles on a screen and\/or listen to the signals. Through this process, the doctor will detect patterns and any electrical abnormalities.<\/p>\n
Normal and healthy nerves should be electrically silent when at rest.<\/p>\n
Once the test is complete, the needles are removed. You might notice some bruising a day after the test and feel sore. However, this will dissipate in a few days.<\/p>\n
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), also known as Nerve Conduction Velocity, are usually performed alongside EMG to determine whether nerves are functional as they should be. However, unlike the EMG test, NCS involves stimulating the nerves and measuring the response of the nerves and muscles.<\/p>\n
For this test, the testing doctor will apply electrodes on the skin at various places along the pathway of the nerves being tested. An electric current will be used to stimulate the nerves. You will feel a tingling sensation, or a rubber band has flicked your skin.<\/p>\n
The electrodes capture the signals and measure the signal to measure the signal’s speed. An electric signal along a healthy nerve can travel as fast as 120 mph. The rate of travel will be lower in damaged nerves.<\/p>\n
The doctor can locate the damaged nerves by adjusting the electrode placement and stimulating the nerves from different areas.<\/p>\n
The accuracy of these tests is highly dependent on the quality and precision of the equipment used and the skills and experience of the medical professional administering the tests. The EMGs and NCS tests are typically accurate enough to diagnose diseases and injuries to nerves, nerve roots, and muscles.<\/p>\n
However, there are plenty of cases where it might take several weeks to even months before the damage to nerves becomes apparent and detectable by these tests. Patients may feel pain, but the electrodiagnostic tests do not pick up on the disorder. There isn’t a lot of preparation to do in readiness for the test. On the day of the test, just take a shower to remove oils on your skin. In the same light, do not apply lotion or any oils on your skin after showering. The oils and lotions can interfere with the test, resulting in inaccurate or completely wrong results. You are also advised not to wear jewelry during the tests.<\/p>\n
On the medical front, you should disclose any medication you’re taking, especially if you are on blood thinners or taking medicine for any illness.<\/p>\n
